Helicopter pilot blinded’ by laser beam prankster

A HEATON Norris man endangered the lives of a police helicopter pilot, his fellow officers and people on the ground by temporarily blinding him with a laser beam.

Dean Bottomley, 20, of Larwood Avenue, was playing around with a high-powered green laser at home when he pointed it directly at a police chopper flying overhead.

Lets call lasers weapons

A HASTINGS flying instructor believes NSW should follow in the footsteps of Western Australian and declare hand-held lasers “controlled weapons” after an incident in the skies above Port Macquarie.

Yesterday, the Western Australian Police Minister John Kobelke declared laser pointers to be ‘controlled weapons’ with fines of up to $4000 or 12 months jail for their illegal use.

It is a move that will strengthen the push in New South Wales to have the hand-held devices officially banned.

Ferries targeted in laser attacks

A Ferry driver has been the subject of a laser attack on Sydney harbour.

Witnesses have told police the laser beam came from a man standing on the Rose Bay public wharf.

The ferry was passing around Seven Thirty when a green laser was shone into the cabin – temporarily blinding the skipper.

UEFA fined French champion Lyon 3,200 euros (C$5,000) Thursday because a fan aimed a laser pen at Manchester United player Cristiano Ronaldo during a match.

Television replays showed a circle of bright, green light shining on the Portugal international during the first half of United’s Champions League game at Stade Gerland on Feb. 20.

Pilot tells court how laser light blinded him

Andrew Taylor told the District Court in a victim impact statement he was blinded for up to 10 seconds by the green light that appeared in the cockpit.

His statement was read to the court during sentencing submissions for Lanfranco Baldetti, 23, who has pleaded guilty to prejudicing the safe operation of an aircraft.

Baldetti is one of the first people in Australia to be prosecuted for shining a laser at an aircraft.

Someone pointed a hand-held laser at the cockpits of two planes landing at the Calgary airport recently, causing serious safety concerns, Transport Canada says.

Similar incidents have happened in Calgary six times in the past 24 months.
